(via imgTumble)Here’s another round of the vegan food glossary:
⃣ What is quinoa? While quinoa is usually considered to be a whole grain, it is actually a seed, but can be prepared like whole grains such as rice or barley. It takes less time to cook than other whole grains – just 10 to 15 minutes. Quinoa tastes great on its own. Of all the whole grains, quinoa has the highest protein content. Quinoa provides all 9 essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. Quinoa is a gluten-free and cholesterol-free whole grain, and is almost always organic.
⃣ What is agave? Agave nectar is sometimes called agave syrup or agave sweetener. Agave nectar has a taste and appearance similar to honey, making it a popular substitute for vegans who avoid honey. Agave nectar is nearly always organic and raw, and has a relatively low Glycemic Index, particularly when compared to other sweeteners.
⃣ What is Hemp? Hemp does not contain the same amount of THC, the active narcotic in its close cousin, “marijuana” (cannabis). Therefore hemp products come with no legal liabilities. The hemp plant contains similar amounts of protein to soy. Hemp is made naturally by simply sieving out the fiber. Hemp contains almost every amino acid and high amounts of omega-3. Hemp also helps those who are lacking fiber and embracing a gluten-free diet.
⃣ What are Goji Berries? Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are a reddish-orange berry with a slightly sweet and usually sour flavor. Frequently marketed as a superfood, they can usually be found in the supplement section. Goji berries are very high in antioxidants and so they are a great anti-inflammatory. #vegansofig
